Richard Babusci is an artist originally from Pittsburgh, PA. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) from Edinboro University, and over the last 20 years he’s exhibited in galleries across the country. He currently resides in York with his 3 kids and his dog.
Richard’s work intricately blends abstract and figurative elements to create surreal landscapes that feel both ambiguous and emotionally intense. The aim is to prompt an exploration of each viewer’s own personal unconscious storylines.
“My paintings always start with random ink blots and water spills. It’s important to me that their beginnings are chaotic. Then I use my brushes and paint to kind of carve the composition out of the mess – a bit like trimming and training a bonsai. Gradually, they evolve into strange scenes populated by ghostly figures and shadows which interact to suggest a narrative that feels visceral, ephemeral and personal as a dream. In this way, I hope my paintings reveal themselves to every viewer slightly differently. Rather than making a clear statement, I want my art to offer creative prompts for unique narratives to grow from.”
Away from the canvas, Rick enjoys reading, hiking, kayaking, and playing chess. He finds endless inspiration in the natural world, mythologies old and new, music, film, and the amazing work of other artists.

I got the name for Damage Control from the eponymous role on a naval vessel— the objective is to keep the ship from going down when catastrophe occurs. In essence, this music project is the damage control to the ship that is my life. I started banging on pots and pans when I was around three, and drumming has been an integral part of my life ever since. With help from my Father (Colin Develin, featured in the 2024 Artist Collab Series!), and additional support from my Mother and multi-instrumentalist brothers, I was able to pick up bass and guitar. Due to friends’ inconsistent schedules, I began to write and perform parts for myself. So at least if I ever get signed, the record company doesn’t have to worry about Yoko breaking me up.
